...The next day Krishna was at my Hotel, waiting for me. I went to his house and met his extended family. After I finished saying “Namaste” (hello and goodbye in Hindi – Namaste means “I bow to the god within you”) to all his family members, I went on the roof with Krishna. He had loads of kites, and he taught me how to fly them. All the kids in the neighborhood were out flying their kites, practicing for the big kite festival, that was on January 14th (one month from then). Krishna showed me how “cut” other peoples kites. You made your kite-string rub against the other persons string; the person who broke the other persons string won....

2015 Soul-Making Keats Literary Competition

“…On the horizon, Bella noticed a small pack of langurs bounding down the street toward our restaurant. She jumped up from our table and ran toward the edge of the rooftop to get a better view. This also gave the monkeys a better view of the garlic naan she was holding in her hand. The leader of the troop took a few giant leaps and, seconds later, Bella’s naan was in his mouth, and his entire troop of cronies was dining with us…”

...Lamb rogan josh was by far my favorite dish in India. A chef at the famous Lake Palace in Udaipur ran a delivery kitchen near our home, and we had dinner brought to us via motorcycle at least once per week. The food was exquisite, and the flavors were more intense than anything I had ever eaten before. The most outrageously spicy dish was lamb rogan josh. It was crunchy with whole cloves, anise, and cardamom—you either had to pick them out, or just go for it and chew them whole, overindulging in the precious flavors of the orient. The heat of the chilies made the dish almost unbearable—the kids couldn’t hack it—but I learned something shameful about myself: I am a culinary masochist...
